CAMBRIDGE, ON – Thousands of Ontario children are going to have the chance to fall in love with hockey this season, thanks to the announcement of 62 First Shift programs coming to Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) minor hockey associations, marking an all-time high.
The First Shift is designed to break down barriers a family may face when thinking about participating in hockey, ensuring a welcoming, safe, affordable and fun experience for those new to hockey. For just $199, boys and girls from 6-10 years of age are outfitted head-to-toe in Bauer equipment and receive six weeks of on-ice instruction.
“We love to see new participants trying on the equipment for the first time and getting that first real sense of what hockey is,” says Tony Foresi, OHF President. “Hockey is a fun and special way to make life-long friends. We are so grateful to have the Canadian Tire First Shift program to help bring the game to so many new players.”
A highlight this year, is leading the country in female-only programs being delivered through the OWHA and its Members. Throughout 2017-18, 10 girls’ hockey associations across the province will be hosting 13 Canadian Tire First Shift programs, allowing more than 400 girls the opportunity to experience the game in a fun and safe environment.
In the program’s fourth year of existence, Canadian Tire First Shift is well on its way to reaching its goal of successfully transitioning participants into minor hockey associations across the country.
There are over 2,000 positions available to participants across the OHF, stretching from St. Catharines to Iroquois Falls (the complete list is included below). The majority of the programs (42) will be hosted in the fall, with an additional 20 programs running in the winter. Registration is now available and can be found at www.firstshift.ca.
