ONT. - Over 26,000 pounds of food was collected by minor hockey associations in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association for the North Bay Food Bank earlier this season.

In its fourteenth year, Coach4Food saw 27 teams from 3 minor hockey associations in the community engage in a friendly competition to collect the most donations for the North Bay Food Bank from November 22nd to December 1st with the top three teams awarded practices led by coaching staff from the OHL’s North Bay Battalion.

Co-chaired by long time minor hockey volunteers Debbie and Heath Marson, the two have seen the Coach4Food initiative continue to grow each year with the support of the community – and hope to see it continue on as such.

“We saw a slight increase in number of teams participating this year, as well as about 4,000 more pounds of food collected [over last year],” she said. “Heath and I are very proud of the 2018 (and 2017) totals as the totals collected is a true indication of our youth hockey players, supported by their coaches and families, going door-to-door in our community to help others out.”

Community support a plenty, the Battalion allow the Coach4Food program to hold food drives at their games during the season, and facilitates practices with coaching staff and players for the 3 winning minor hockey teams

“We are fortunate to have a great partnership with our OHL team, the North Bay Battalion - who have been a part of the Coach4Food program since its development and early stages, as the Brampton Battalion,” she said.

And although there was great success in 2018, Debbie strives to always do better.

“We hope to grow the program to include more types of teams and participants, to continue to support the needs of the North Bay Food Bank and our community,” said Debbie.

Coach4Food will be back in 2019, with the campaign tentatively scheduled to run from November 21st to December 1st. For more information, visit:
