Team Ontario brought the Canada Winter Games men’s hockey silver medal home from Red Deer this past February, falling in overtime to Team Quebec.
Held every four years, the Canada Winter Games showcases the top under-16 hockey talent in the country that sees one province or territory emerge as the best in the Nation. The top under-16 players from across the province were selected to represent Team Ontario who entered into the event as the defending champions, having won gold at the 2015 Games in Prince George, BC.
Team Ontario finished up preliminaries behind Team Quebec with a record of 2-1 in the round robins, beating Team Nova Scotia and Team New Brunswick. In the quarterfinals, Team O faced Team Manitoba, coming out with the 6-3 win. With that Team O was set to battle Team Alberta for a spot in the gold medal game, where they ended up with an 8-4 victory over the home favourites. While the gold medal game was a close one, Team Quebec finished up the Games undefeated scoring the game winner in overtime over Team O.
Brennan Othmann (Pickering, ON / Don Mills Flyers - GTHL) finished second in the scoring race with 10 goals and 6 assists for 16 points - only Jack Campbell of Team Prince Edward Island put more up than Othmann, ending the games with 17 points.
Team O’s Shane Wright (Burlington, ON / Don Mills Flyers) was also a leading scorer in the tournament with 11 points.
Liam Arnbsy (Ajax, ON / Don Mills Flyers) and Brandt Clarke (Ottawa, ON / Don Mills Flyers) tied for third most on the team with 9 points each.
Othmann, Wright, Arnsby and Clarke have each participated in at least one OHF Championship: All four players were on the Don Mills Flyers Bantam AAA team that won the All-Ontario Bantam AAA Championship in 2018.
Congratulations to all Team Ontario Men’s players and staff on an excellent Canada Winter Games!
