A tradition he hopes to carry on for many birthdays to come, Mikael Kingo, former Burlington Eagles and Vaughan Kings netminder, is providing young hopefuls with a full set of goalie equipment.
Kingo, who started out in the sport borrowing equipment, explained that there is pride in owning your own set of pads, but unfortunately it is a luxury that some kids and their families simply can’t afford.
For that reason, the netminder has pledged to surprise a nominee on his own birthday with a set of equipment. Nominees, who are in need or know of someone who is, are sent to Kingo.
“I was raised that we should always give back when we can, so I have always tried to do that,” explained Kingo.
This year Kingo has received a great deal of support from the hockey community and aims to surprise two goalies with their own equipment.
Kingo credited former coaches Becky Kellar and Vic Vescio for encouraging him to become a goaltender and achieving his goals in the sport. Both coaches were on the ice helping with last years donation, as well as hockey legend Doug Gilmour, who provided a signed jersey to the young goalie.
