During this great time of need, the Humber Valley Hockey Association’s hockey family banded together to support a number of causes providing relief in the fight against COVID-19.

A total of $30,000 was donated, with $15,000 pledged by competitive A and AA Humber Valley teams to assist frontline workers, and another $15,000 given to the Daily Bread Food Band, in memory of George DeMarchi, a dedicated volunteer at the HVHA.

“We wanted to pay tribute to George as well as our other volunteers while assisting the Daily Bread Food Bank,” said Steve Allmen, president of the Humber Valley Sharks.

Among the organizations recognized by the Sharks A & AA teams were the Breakfast of Champions program, which provides front-line healthcare workers at St. Joseph’s Health Centre with free meals, the Sienna Senior Living Meals Program, which provides prepackaged meals for families of staff at long term health care facilities in Toronto, and the Michael Garron Hospital Foundation which helps to purchase personal protective equipment for front-line workers.

Allmen noted the importance of supporting organizations such as the food bank and local relief initiatives during this challenging time.

“Organizations in every community are struggling to keep up with the significant demand right now,” he said. “We encourage anyone looking to help, reach out to their local organizations to find out how they can assist.”
