Minor hockey seasons across the nation ended rather quickly, there was no time to plan celebrations or end of year banquets. However, just as many have had to do during the COVID-19 crisis, teams are adapting.

The U11 AAA Markham Waxers weren’t going to let not being able to have a face to face party deter them from celebrating a successful season. Instead, the Waxers, led by Coach Mike Gellard, took to video conferencing to celebrate their end of season party.

“I wanted to make sure we had a year-end celebration with all the boys where we could all be together and celebrate the season,” said Coach Gellard. “Knowing we were not going to be able to do this in person because of COVID-19, we figured a Zoom call was the next best thing.”

With other teams also wondering how they can close out the season, platforms such as Zoom, Skype and Microsoft Teams are a great way of getting everyone together for one last celebration. It allows teams to end on a positive note, relive some of their memories from the past year and see their coaches and teammates again while following Provincial guidelines.

“The kids loved it, you could see the excitement on their faces! Everyone was dressed up to make it special and feel more like real life,” explained Coach Gellard. “Everyone got a chance to speak and talk about the season. We played a questions game which everyone enjoyed.

“It was a great way to close off a successful season that was cut short.”
