CHAMPIONSHIP STATISTICS

HOST COMMUNITY

According to historian Kari Abel, by January 1912, “the most elaborate affair” (outside of the new mining structures, of course), was the South Porcupine hockey rink (which featured a canvas roof).  Used by local teams who even boasted owning uniforms, challenges were thrown down between bank managers and mine managers, ladies versus men and of course, community against community. Hockey was a big deal in the early days of the Porcupine – a man’s game for a manly community. Local papers reported on the outcome of the matches; money was raised for uniforms and equipment, and organized games and leagues soon followed.

Many names in hockey history are from South Porcupine. The historically famous on and off the ice, Bill Barilko, who flew his plane from the Austin Airway Base located at the far end of Golden Avenue on Porcupine Lake, never returned. Danny Belisle, James Connelly, Les Costello, Murray Costello, Lloyd Doran, Bob Nevin, Eric Prentice, Dean Prentice, Pete Babando.

So many builders of the sport of hockey in South Porcupine. We think about the years of commitment from Don Pecore, Jack Hepworth: the Costello Family, Carlo Cattarello, Harry Coott, and Burt St. Amour, just to name a few who were and are still the working hockey hearts of South Porcupine.  Players spoken of often are seen as you walk the rink and look at the walls of the Carlo Cattarello Arena, The Barn the South Porcupine Arena. Some would include Tkaczuk, Lever, Stefanski, McGinn and many more. The walls are filled with team photos from South Porcupine. Take your time looking, as you will likely find a relative in those amazing photos. South Porcupine Proud has always been our statement and still is!
